Battle Hymn is inspired by the true story of the American minister Dean Hess, portrayed with rare sensitivity by Rock Hudson. As a bomber pilot in World War II, Hess accidentally dropped a bomb destroying a German orphanage. Tormented by guilt, he moved to Korea after the war to offer his services as a missionary. Drawing on the best elements of Christianity and Eastern spirituality, Hess established a large home for orphaned children. His missionary efforts were threatened when the Korean police crackdown erupted in 1950.
